Cleaning Your Glasses The RIGHT Way

We’ve all done it. You just dropped your glasses on the floor, and in a rush to clean them of any germs, you breathe on your lens and wipe the dirt off with your shirt. That should do the trick, right? We know you’re shaking your head yes right now. I know, doing this is easy and convenient, but truth be told, it is one of the worst ways to clean your glasses. The problem with using your shirt to clean your lenses are that they’re constantly gathering dirt and dust that you can’t see with the naked eye. Additionally, these particles could scratch your lenses, and buffing them out is nigh impossible. Today we’ll be talking about the easiest and tried and true method.

Ol’ Reliable

Without a doubt, the easiest way to clean the dirt off your glasses is to mix warm water with a drop of soap, then dry them with a soft cotton cloth. Don’t forget to wash your frames while cleaning the lens’ as well! A soft toothbrush can even be used to scrub the harder-to-reach spots, like the nose pads. DO NOT use a toothbrush on the lenses though, as that will scratch them for sure.

While a simple wash with soap and water seems easy enough, watch out for certain soaps and cloths. Cleaning products that contain alcohol, ammonia, bleach, vinegar, or window cleaner are off-limits. These chemicals can negatively affect the coatings on your lenses, and could even damage the frame. A mild dish detergent is probably the best choice when it comes to cleaning your glasses. As stated previously, a soft cotton towel is the best way to dry your glasses. Whatever you do, DO NOT use paper towels or napkins to dry off your glasses. Paper products are rough and can damage your lenses just like your shirt.

The Extras

We know the frustration that occurs, when your glasses are constantly grimey. To keep your glasses fresh, minimize the amount of times you touch your glasses. Your hands’ natural oils can sully your specs very easily. In addition, don’t leave your glasses out in the open in the bathroom. Hairspray, perfume, or other products can leave a deposit of film all over your glasses, which may be hard to get off. Using your case when you aren’t wearing them will not only keep them safe, but also maintain their cleanliness. Essentially, the best practice for keeping your glasses clean is to be mindful of what is touching them and where you leave them.

Remember, your glasses should last you a good long while, after all they are essential for your daily functioning. Take care of your glasses by routinely cleaning them THE CORRECT WAY, with soap, warm water, and a cotton cloth. Don’t ever use your shirt, or any paper products again. Trust us, it’ll all be worth it.
